Winter is the old enemy of many people trying to keep up with their fitness routines, but it doesn’t have to be. While the days may be getting shorter and colder, you still have the time you need to invest in your fitness. You just need to take a new approach to it, so here are some tips on how to stay fit during winter.
Embrace winter, but be safe
Don’t miss the forest for the trees, or the beauty of winter for the cold that it brings. Focus on the positives of winter, like the fact there are going to be fewer people to get in the way of your winter run. But don’t forget to stay seen and stay safe, now that days are getting darker. Invest in some high-vis gear to make sure that motorists, cyclists, and others can much more easily avoid you on your run.
Make sure you’ve got the right gear
If you still want to go out running and cycling, then by all means do so. However, going out without the right winter activewear is not only comfortable, it can be dangerous, leaving you at risk of hypothermia. Layering up is wise, but make sure that you do it the right way. Layers of breathable, light-weight gear like a fleece and breathable outer jacket over a sweat-resistant base layer like wool blends or polypropylene can keep you cosy without overheating you.
Keep your workout indoors
If you really don’t want to deal with the cold and the changes in the weather, then it might be time to bring your exercises indoors. This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to make the trek to the gym, however. At The Fitness Shop, we have a range of indoor fitness equipment, from strength training equipment to cardio equipment to functional fitness gear, that can help you easily build your own workout space in your home gym. Not only does that make it easier to schedule your workout and avoid driving on potentially icy or rain slicked roads, but it’s more cost-effective than a gym membership in the long-run, too.
Start working together
It can be hard to stay motivated in the winter if you simply can’t focus on the positives that the season brings with it. For that reason, finding new ways to get pumped up is important. If your workout playlist isn’t enough, then joining new fitness classes might be just the thing for you. Working out with others has been proven to help us last longer, feel the effects of exertion less, and to make us more accountable and less likely to skip a day, since we know that others are expecting us.
You don’t have to change your routine too dramatically to stay fit during winter but making a change with the seasons can help you keep your motivation up and stick to your goals. If you’re looking to avoid the chill altogether, don’t forget to check out The Fitness Shop for the cost-effective, convenient gear that can help you build a gym in your own home.
